Information regarding the "Haviva Reick" Ship (2.6.46 – 8.6.46)

1. The Nonprofit Organization for the Commemoration of "Haviva Reick" Immigrants

On June 29, 2025, The Nonprofit Organization was established by the second and third generations of the ship's immigrants: "The Nonprofit Organization for the Commemoration of 'Haviva Reick' Immigrants – Haviva Reick (RA 580817831)". The Nonprofit Organization operates to commemorate and preserve the memory of the immigrants, out of a deep commitment to sharing their story.

2. The Story of the Ship and the Immigrants

Out of only four immigrant ships that sailed from Greece to Israel, the "Haviva Reick" is one. The story of the immigrants is folded within the pages of the website, aiming to provide accessible details on each one individually, rather than just the historical story of the ship itself. These individuals, who survived the Nazi inferno and lost entire families and communities, maintained their faith. From the ashes, they set out on their journey, crossing seas and borders, with the goal of reaching Israel and becoming free people. Despite the British who locked the gates, their strong will overcame everything.

3. Roots and the Choice of Life

After the war, the survivors returned to their hometowns, including Thessaloniki, hoping to find a clue about their loved ones. They searched endlessly at the community offices. Aliya activists, accompanied by members of the "Hagana," cared for the survivors and united young people who had lost their world around them. They were joined by Holocaust survivors from the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary – strangers who became partners in fate. Human connections turned into love, and love into a promise for the future.

4. Training Camps (near Athens)

Before their immigration to Israel, members of the "Hagana" and dedicated activists established gathering and training places. These camps provided the survivors with a framework, joint activities, agricultural work, and community life, restoring their sense of belonging. Names of the camps:
• Katima Chakouna Farm
• Stay Kortzion Girls' Shelter
• Frankoklissia
• Patissia

5. Defending the State (1948)

Even before they could build a home, start a family, or taste a life of tranquility, the immigrants were called to defend the land they had just reached. Without knowledge of combat, without equipment, and sometimes without experience, they set out to fight with a big heart and faith in the justice of the cause. In memory of the eight immigrants of the ship who fell in the defense of the state in 1948 – they gave their lives for the land they dreamed of.
